Amazon announces plans to open new Maryland facility
ANNAPOLIS, MD. — Amazon announced Wednesday that they plan to open a new distribution center in Baltimore, Maryland.
The company said they plan to construct an 855,000 square-foot fulfillment center at Tradepoint Atlantic.
The new facility is said to bring 1,500 new jobs to the Maryland region.
“Amazon’s decision to open a fourth facility in our state is tremendous news for this local community and for Maryland as a whole,” Governor Larry Hogan is quoted in a press release from his office. “Successfully delivering this project and these 1,500 new jobs has been a top priority of our administration and another example of how Maryland is – and will continue to be – open for business.”
The new facility will pack and ship customer items such as electronics, books, housewares, and toys.
Amazon currently has three facilities in Baltimore City and Cecil County that employ more than 5,000 employees.
The Maryland Department of Commerce has approved a $2 million conditional loan through the Maryland Economic Development Assistance Authority and Fund to help with construction costs and Baltimore County has also approved a $200,000 conditional loan to assist with development costs at the new facility, according to the office of the Governor.
The company is also eligible for various state and local tax credits, including Maryland’s Job Creation Tax Credit, according to the press release.
“Amazon’s continued commitment to Maryland shows that we are working hard to make our state a place where global companies choose to locate, grow, and create jobs,” said Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill.
